Long Tone Metronome gives wind players a structured framework for the classic long tone exercise — sustaining notes for progressively longer durations to build tone quality, breath support, and stamina.
How to Use
Set your Tempo in beats per minute
Press Start — a Ready, Ready, Set, Set lead-in prepares you
Sustain a note for the full count shown in the right display
Rest when the display says "Rest"
The tone length increases automatically — keep going as long as you can
Press Stop when you are done
Reading the Displays
Left box — the current tone length in beats (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 …)
Right box — the beat countdown within the current tone, then "Rest"
The Sequence
The metronome steps through progressively longer tones with a short rest between each:
Tones 1–4: one beat of rest before the next tone
Tone 5 onwards: two beats of rest, giving you more time to prepare as tones get longer
Tips
Choose a comfortable middle-register note where your tone is most centred
Focus on a steady, even tone from start to finish — no taper at the end
Try different pitches in the same session to build consistency across your range
